Did you know that just about anything you do with Xsitepro can be used as a Facebook Application? Want a lead capture page? Want to only show content if they liked your applications? Want to post to a users wall when they download your product? Want to integrate with aweber and not only get a new subscriber but also force them to advertise for you? There is a lot more you can do as well.

Building facebook applications is a little complicated. The documentation is all over the place, the on-line tutorials don't really work with Xsitpro, etc... I've been adding functionality to Xsitepro for years and I've cracked the Facebook code with Xsitepro.

The first question I get asked about this product is "can I do it if I'm not a programmer?". The answer is yes. If you can use Xsitepro to publish a website to your hosting you should be able to handle the rest. I keep it simple - and I've been teaching others how to get more out of Xsitepro for years. The first several tutorials for Facebook are up, and we are adding new ones with advanced features now. I'm proud to announce that users who have NEVER actually used their copy of Xsitepro now have their own Facebook Applications - and they did it all on their own just following instructions.

No other programs (such as ftp) are required. It's ALL done in Xsitepro!

Really interesting, I'm curious though can I do everything with this that a Facebook Application can do? And is it all really done in XSitePro, are you saying no coding is required, are the scripts built into the XSitePro pages automatically?

It's more of you can do anything in the application that xsitepro can do :) -- but we've extended that a bit with code chunks that you can just paste in where you want them.

Applications not made with xsitepro have databases, etc... Which we might be covering down the road (because you can use databases with xsitepro), but it would only be for the users who are comfortable with it since it's a good bit more complicated than a normal xsitepro site.

Ed,

Can you please fill me in a little more....
Quote:

, so if I have forms that process Perl/CGI-bin scripts those will run as an application?

Also:

I use databases all the time, this would be important, but not as important as being able to run any type of script (perl, javascript, and especially php) as a Facebook application, can you give me details on which scripting languages are supported? I'm guessing you cover how these are converted into Facebook application language, rather than providing a converter?

Turning a xsitepro generated site into something that uses a lot of any kind of programming can be a bit of a nightmare - usually I confine anything done with xsitepro to snippets to generate extra content, etc..

Sounds like what you are wanting is to turn a script you have into an application, you can certainly do that. I'm about half way done on a tutorial I'm putting up at blackhatdigest.com - might want to subscribe to the feed so you know when it's complete. It should show you how to do what you want.

If you are currently putting scripts into xsitepro sites -- then the answer is yes. FBML is not required anymore.

Sorry, I don't understand that. Your earlier posts says everything is done in xsite pro. I am confused.

It is. Brett and I are sort of having a different conversation. He's got scripts he plugs into his xsitepro sites. He wants to know if he can include them in a facebook application made with xsitepro.

OK, but your web site doesn;t make it any easier to understand how it works. Please pm me or elaborate here: what is not clear is what kind of FB application can be built and whether anything except xsitepro is required (like manual tweaking or anything else). I am interested and would love to know more but please show me something tangible I can look at. Thank you.

I thought FBML is now deprecated and not used anyway, from what I see you have to run pages inside an IFRAME. Are you saying that Facebook Applications still operate from FBML pages?

Another question: I have PERL applications that currently run as CGI-BINs from another website. I would like to turn those into full-blown Facebook applications. I do not have those applications running inside of XSitePro, they were created by hand in HTML Editors way before I had XSitePro. The front-end is no big deal, of course I can lose those pages all I want into XSitePro, and I have done that. But the back-end are called out .cgi, or .pl applications that run from the browser and return HTML pages in return.

I agree, Ed could you please provide an example, maybe a link to a facebook application you created from XSitePro? I really see value in what you are explaining, if the real value is in video instructions then can you provide a sample of one of the tutorials?

I've got some videos going up on the sales page early next week, and there will be a few demo apps made in relation to them that you can check out.

Just got to finish the voice overs.

As I mentioned above Brett - you can do alot with xsitepro, but it's been years since I've touched a perl script. I don't see why it wouldn't work though. If you are looking for heavy integration with an existing script, I don't think xsitepro is your best solution or option at all. Forms you can certainly include.

I'm not totally sure on what it is that you are helping
us with when it comes to facebook.

Can you give some examples of what your new service
can do?

I'd be interested in seeing them.

Thanks.
Ash.

Sorry all - not getting notifications of replies here, and I forgot to come back and update this thread.

I elected to not put video up on the sales page - mainly because my videos are just fine for training - but just not good for a sales page :)

We have been linking to a sample application for some time. Here is a direct link:
