I have seen this situation on countless websites, and am trying to do the same. A quick search on the forum tells me others have needed this too.

I have a parent pages with quite a few sub-pages under them.

In some cases the parent page is blank and I don't want it to be accessible to viewers. It's a recipe for them to navigate away from your site if they click on a menu link and it takes them to an empty page. Even if on the parent page I put links to all the sub-pages that is just double the work for the web site designer and the viewer has to irritatingly click two links to get to the page (and likewise two back clicks to get to where they originally were). That is not user freindly.

As of 1 Apr 2011 Jason said there is no way to stop the parent page only, from being published, while still having access to the sub-pagess.

Shouldn't this be quite a basic feature for Xsitepro seeing as it can do sub-pages. Could there be a tick box saying something like:
"Do Not Publish This Page If a Parent Page". It would still show in the menu but only so when it's hovered over the sub-page menu pops out.

Thanks,

Beefy.

Why not make the unwanted parent page redirect back to the homepage, or any other page you desire.

I agree. This would be a very nice feature to have and most development platforms have this feature. Linking back to home page or another page is kind of mickey mouse solution to the issue.

I also asked this last year. The thing is though, if XSP team made it possible, how would iPad and iPhone users access the subpage, if there is no parent? I mean... does the dynamic menu work for them, too?

Hi, i think i have the same issue. I'm a newbie & made my 1st site using xsitepro and found out that everytime I make the menu & submenu xsitepro always create a page.

Is there any way not to create a page and just a menu/ category? I dont know what to do with the parent category so i just put snippet/ text that linked to submenu/ category. I think its a useless page. Can someone tell me, is that page will badly affect my site on SEO?

This is my site, please advice how is the best way to structure the site

You could use an external navigational/link menu creator.
Be careful, when using AdSense next to an image.
Don't link to a subpage from the parent page like that. Use a few words as anchor text, not the whole paragraph.

The solution in XSitePro is quite easy, really. Right click in the Design view for the Parent Page and choose Insert Links to All Sub-pages > Bulleted List > with Descriptions. This gives the visitor a navigation tool to get to the sub-pages (will work for mobile devices, too!). XSitePro updates the list automatically when you add new sub-pages. The page descriptions in the bullets gives more food to the search engines. I usually also add some text to that page explaining what the section is about (good for both visitors and search engines).

In Chrome, there is a big gap above the content on your pages. Go to Page Layout > Main Panel Header > Height and make sure there's a number in there, NOT zero. AND it must not be blank. The number "1" will work fine.

It's not a useless page to the search engines! Make full use of it! Add keywords, content and links to the sub-pages, of course.

Andrea is correct (as always)
Make use of the page.
Add photos
Create an outline of the sub-pages with explanations of what folks will see. Not duplicate content though.
Add a video, then the links to the subs
Etc
Etc
Etc

Enjoy
